A Variety Of 7 Intervals

Finish screen for today’s 10K.

Today’s indoor rowing started with a vague inclination to row 10K at an average pace of 2:09 for 9500 meters and then row faster during the last 500 meters of that 10K.  But I seemed to have plenty of energy at the start and so I rowed at a pace faster than 2:09.  After about 8 minutes, I decided to change the plan and do some intervals of varying times and paces.

The 10K was preceded and followed by 1K warmup/down.

A screen recording for those of you who’d like to row along with it will be available a few hours from now at this link: Indoor Rowing 10K with 7 intervals 12092018

Anticipating The HRV Coach

This helpful diagram relating to things that influence Heart Rate Variability was found on the blog/website called Minding The Borderlands

Today’s rowing session was the third day in a row in which I boldly included a small degree of relatively intensive (for me) rowing.  The reason I have been so bold is because I recently ordered a device which will enable me to get a daily reading of Heart Rate Variability, to use as a “coach”, “guide” or whatever analogy you’d like to use for the biomarker or medical “signpost” provided by the day to day trend of HRV.

Before learning about HRV, I had backed off from and mostly avoided rowing very hard, lest I overdo it and cause injury of some sort.  But after reading about and watching video talks about HRV, it looks like the answer to that problem.  If properly used, the cumulative analysis of daily HRV readings can tell if a person is stressed to the point where rest is needed.

The image at the top of today’s entry is from a website named Minding the Borderlands,  in an informative article focusing on HRV titled “Heart Rate Variability: The Amazing Biomarker for Understanding Our Body, Health and Fitness“.

Today’s session was 30 minutes online in the company of several others who were located in the US and Europe.  Though I finished a distant last place compared to all the others, I rowed at what was for me a relatively intensive pace compared to what has been typical for quite a while.  It felt good.

Steady-State Online

Finish screen for the 10K portion. There was a 1K warm down following it.

Today’s rowing session was 10K online in the company of another rower who is in the same “ballpark” of rowing capability as me.  He rowed a steady state pace, after rowing a bit faster at the start to raise his heart rate to where he wanted it.  I paced him.  By very subjective “perceived effort,” I categorized today’s session as a little bit more than “easy” and therefore it is categorized as “medium”.  That’s only relative to me, of course.  Your perceived effort will vary, depending on your age, conditioning etc.

A screen recording was made for those of you who’d like to row-along with the session.  It will be available a few hours from the time this is posted, at this link: Indoor Rowing 10K and WD online 11282018

Better Late Than Skip Another Day

Sleep schedule discombobulation resulted in a very late sleep-in today.  Though I prefer to row in the a.m., p.m. is better than skipping yet another day, so I scheduled an online session for this afternoon at 4 p.m. local time.  Happily, there was one other rower for whom that was a workable time to row and he joined the session.

The other rower inspired me to go a little bit faster.  I watched as his lead increased and wondered if I could row at a pace fast enough to keep his lead to less than 1,000 meters by the time he finished.  When it became certain that wouldn’t happen, I decided to change my goal for the session to keeping his lead to less than 1,100 meters by the time he finished.  It resulted in a season best 10K time for me, but no change in my placement in the Concept 2 online logbook rankings.

Season’s First HM

Actually, I didn’t want to do a half marathon today. How I feel after today’s HM, including how I sleep tonight, will help to decide whether I do any more half marathons this season.

Last night I logged on to Oarbits Live Feed (the online rowing website) with the intention of scheduling a 10K session for 07:00 (7:00 a.m.).  There was already an online session scheduled for that time, but it was a half marathon.  I joined it instead of scheduling a 10K, because there were already two people signed up for it and therefore by joining the HM I was virtually guaranteed to have some virtual company.

That’s what makes rowing online so worthwhile: the virtual company of other REAL PEOPLE who are also rowing the same session. You can watch their pace and other information about each other rower and empathize with them.  And they can do likewise.

I entered today’s half marathon results in the Concept 2 online world ranking for this season, since it is the only HM I’ve done this season and is therefore my best HM so far this season…

10K Again But Different Intervals

Today’s session was 10K that started out for 15 minutes easy as warm up.  After the first 15 minutes, four sets of 4 min R 3 min intervals were done.

I don’t know what is the best effort level for the intervals.  The first 4 minute interval felt a bit too hard, so I did the next ones at a slower pace. The important thing was to work hard enough during the intervals to both elevate heart rate and cause myself to breathe hard, with some anaerobic effort.

The session was recorded and will be available at this link: Indoor Rowing 10K with 4 Intervals 11122018

It Used To Be Easy

Today’s session was 10K done with a HR target zone of 138-150.  Instead of pushing to get HR immediately into the zone at the beginning, I rowed at what used to be an easy pace, according to my own subjective perceived effort.  It felt harder today, so this session is categorized as Medium Workout.

A Slow Climb Into Heart Rate Zone

Today’s session was another 10K.  With a heart rate target zone. At the beginning, I felt a bit tired and decided to use the first 3K as a warmup instead of ramping up immediately to get into the target zone of 138-150 BPM.

After the first 3K I decided to continue the slower pace and see how it went.  I’m not sure if I was tired or if the particular music playlist I chose to listen to through earphones was a drag.  I didn’t care for any of the music, so it may have at least been a contributing factor.

Whatever the underlying reason, every stroke was accompanied with reluctance and inertia and required extra willpower to do.  Therefore today’s session is not being tagged in the category of “Fun Workout”. It did feel good and resemble “fun”, however, when it was finished.

Absent Minded Excess

Today’s rowing session was 10K with target HR zone of 138 to 150.  For a few minutes during the session I was absent minded from rowing, letting my thoughts drift elsewhere.  During those few minutes, HR exceeded the upper boundary.
