13+ Miles For The Solstice Challenge

Al-june-21-HM

An annual indoor rowing challenge that Concept 2 sponsors is to do 21,000 meters on the 21st of June which is the longest day of the year.  They suggest adding 97 meters to the 21K, which brings the distance to a half marathon, which is a little over 13 miles.

So I joined an online HM today and did the half marathon slowly with only one break for a call of nature.

About 7 Miles A Bit Warm And Ultra Slow

AK-June-20th-2017-11K-ultra-slow

Today’s rowing was done offline.  Without the company of any other rowers, an important incentive to row without taking any breaks was missing.  Many breaks were taken, while I rowed and watched a documentary titled Command and Control.

The temperature was a bit too warm for the air conditioning to keep the house as cool as normal and that also contributed to rowing ultra slow.

The distance rowed was 11,000 meters, which is 6.84 miles.

A Mere 3,000 Meters

3000-meter-track

A track star could run a 3,000 meter race in somewhere between 7 and 8 minutes. I did 3,000 meters at a very easy pace on the Concept 2 rowing machine today, and took about twice as long as it would have taken a track star to run the same distance.

Still… it managed to burn off about 170 calories, which is better than nada.

This morning I had a very early appointment which meant I had to leave the house even earlier which meant I had to rise from bed before dawn. That may have been related to why I didn’t feel like rowing another half marathon today.

Pushups With A Rowing Machine

pushups-and-rowing

The above photo shows one way to combine pushups with use of a rowing machine.  But that’s not how I did it today.

Today was 1/2 marathon of rowing interspersed with pushups and other stuff. In other words, the 1/2 marathon was interrupted multiple times while the clock that was timing it kept on ticking, which is why it took so long.

Ghost Town Online

chloride-ghost-town
This ghost town photo was found on a website called Roadtrippers.com, which is devoted to such sights.

I’m still doing a half marathon distance each day, in the effort to build up a comfortable “distance cushion” for those days when I’m not able to do any rowing.

Today I thought I’d do the half marathon online, in the company of at least one other person.  But when I logged onto Oarbits, the name of the online rowing community’s get-together place on the internet, there was nobody else there.  There was one other person showing to be there, but he didn’t respond when I spoke to him.  This is “normal” … as “normal,” at least, as logging on and happening to find a lot of people logged on, chatting and doing things.  I never know what I’ll find until I go there.

Today it was a virtual ghost town, as you can see from the screen shot below:

So I did the half marathon distance alone, but took several long breaks and rowed very slowly, watching videos about chess and also a video about exercise benefits.

No Strain Rowing

This photo was seen on the USRowing website. You can visit that website by clicking the link in the previous sentence.

The guys in the above photo are definitely straining, but my rowing today was of the no-strain type.

Last night, I didn’t get much sleep, so today when doing a half marathon, I did it with plenty of breaks and at a very, very slow pace.
