Too Much Coffee Today

drink-coffee-be-stupid
When it becomes hard to breathe, everything slow down, no matter how much coffee…

Today, for the first time, I managed to set up a variable intervals session with RowPro 5 for the Mac.  It involved quite a few attempts to set it up and save the session and a couple restarts of the Mac computer.  The final approach that worked was to only enter two lines of the session into the “custom row studio” and then save it, download it into the custom rows, highlight it in custom rows and edit it to add two more lines.  Kept repeating that process until all 14 lines were in the custom variable interval setup.  As I’ve said more than once before, RowPro 5 for the Mac is a “beta” version and still has a few problems to be ironed out.

Then I tried rowing it.  I thought I’d try a different approach from the first attempt (at this c2ctc.com challenge for July 2017 ) and go slower on all the intervals except the very last one, with a target pace of 1:52 for all but the last interval. If I succeeded, it would be faster than the first attempt in which I started out too fast for the first few intervals and had to slow down more than I should have after those first few intervals.

That approach worked well until heart rate became too erratic to display.  When that happens, the HR display and HR graph goes to zero.   It also becomes somewhat harder to breathe. The mind was willing but the body just barely made it through the middle interval of 1,000 meters and I was feeling a bit lightheaded at the end.  There was a 4 minute rest after the 1,000 meters but it wasn’t enough time and I had to give up during the next interval of 750 meters because I couldn’t maintain the target pace of 1:52 due to the fact that it was too hard to breathe.

That’s the first time that’s happened.  Usually, it’s my mind that complains first, and tries to get my body to slow down.  This time, my body couldn’t get enough air and my mind had to decide to quit trying to go fast.

There are still about 8 days left in the month, so maybe I’ll try again in about a week. And abstain from coffee that day.

I categorized this workout as “boring,” because it’s not fun when things don’t work like they should.  A better adjective for today’s workout might be “annoying”.

How much coffee is too much?

I think the catalyst for the irregular heart rate was too much coffee.  I had 5 or 6 cups of coffee this morning, instead of the usual one single cup which I’d limited myself to for a while with success.

Here are the most pertinent screen shots for today’s rowing:

Heart rate was erratic from the 6th split to the finish. When it was regular enough to display during that time, it was way too high for the moderate effort.

Happy rowing to you, with or without coffee.

Yesterday July 12, 2017 One Day Late

happy-people-are-smart-people
During the first part of yesterday’s rowing I listened to a cognitive neuroscience lecture called Happy People are Smart People. The two rowers in the above photo look like smart people.

Yesterday the car broke down just when I had finished rowing and was going to shower, then post the session report.  So it wasn’t done.  Not the posting of yesterday’s session report, at least.  The shower was done, but much later than planned.

So here it is – the session report for what was done in the way of indoor rowing yesterday.

Boring But Educational Rowing

from-pumpd-nutrition-dot-com

Today’s rowing session was 12K done while focusing on something else.  The something else was a series of lectures on cognitive neuroscience for the layman. So that’s where the mental focus was.  The rowing was boring but since I wasn’t paying attention to the rowing while watching the lectures, that was okay.

The photo at the top of this page could be of boring rowing or of fun rowing… the photo doesn’t reveal whether its one or the other.  The website where that photo was found is a a blog page on a site called Pumpd Nutrition and you can see the whole page (and more, if you wish) at THIS LINK. The particular article where that photo was found is called “Ready, Set, Row!” … so I’m guessing that because of the exclamation mark, which is normally associated with non-boring activities, the photo was of some non-boring rowing.

13+ Miles For The Solstice Challenge

Al-june-21-HM

An annual indoor rowing challenge that Concept 2 sponsors is to do 21,000 meters on the 21st of June which is the longest day of the year.  They suggest adding 97 meters to the 21K, which brings the distance to a half marathon, which is a little over 13 miles.

So I joined an online HM today and did the half marathon slowly with only one break for a call of nature.

About 7 Miles A Bit Warm And Ultra Slow

AK-June-20th-2017-11K-ultra-slow

Today’s rowing was done offline.  Without the company of any other rowers, an important incentive to row without taking any breaks was missing.  Many breaks were taken, while I rowed and watched a documentary titled Command and Control.

The temperature was a bit too warm for the air conditioning to keep the house as cool as normal and that also contributed to rowing ultra slow.

The distance rowed was 11,000 meters, which is 6.84 miles.

A Mere 3,000 Meters

3000-meter-track

A track star could run a 3,000 meter race in somewhere between 7 and 8 minutes. I did 3,000 meters at a very easy pace on the Concept 2 rowing machine today, and took about twice as long as it would have taken a track star to run the same distance.

Still… it managed to burn off about 170 calories, which is better than nada.

This morning I had a very early appointment which meant I had to leave the house even earlier which meant I had to rise from bed before dawn. That may have been related to why I didn’t feel like rowing another half marathon today.
