This is a blog about indoor rowing. Or maybe just a rowing journal. Or maybe something even less. More or less.
Ethereal Rowing began on February 18th, 2016 after I visited a daughter’s blog and got the message “Error 503” which meant the particular Google server hosting her blog was down.
So instead of reading her blog I explored Google’s blogspot area and tried making a blog. A few minutes later there was the start of a blog which I named Ethereal Rowing.
Error 503 for daughter’s blog cleared up but she had posted nothing new to hers since my previous visit, so I turned to the blog I had just cobbled together and wrote & published the first Ethereal Rowing post.
The blog is dedicated to the pursuit of health and happiness through indoor rowing and also to any related non sequitur thoughts. (Is that an oxymoron?)
“Ethereal” is a pun on the word ethernet (definition: “a network connected to the Internet”) because… some of the most enjoyable rowing I do is “online” via Ethernet->Internet->to everywhere in the world, with other people all over the planet. “Ethereal” is also apt for reasons relating to some qualities of the rowing experience.
But the suggestion of the idea for giving this blog the name “Ethereal” was because of the specified name of the blog template I selected for it on Google’s “blogspot”. The name of that template was “Ethereal”. I like the word, liked the appearance of the template and liked its name in connection with the enjoyable experience derived from rowing.
The first Ethereal Rowing post and the next few after that can be found at the website hosted by Google at the address etherealrowing.blogspot.com .
This is a non-commercial website and I earn nothing if you click on any links included on any of the pages. One of the reasons for this website is that it serves as a bit of a daily logging exercise for me and therefore is some incentive to row daily.
Another reason for this website is so that anyone who hasn’t been in touch for a while and who wonders if I’m still alive can check to see if I’ve logged anything recently. That is meant to be humorous though I readily acknowledge that it is “dark humor.” But it’s also light humor, because on the other side of this “alive” realm there’s a lot more light than we experience or can imagine here. 🙂
There are other reasons for this blog, including that it is usually fun to do as long as I don’t spend too much time on it.
This particular incarnation of Ethereal Rowing is hosted by someone other than Google.
The RowPro Rowers page shows the list and standings of the virtual club for anyone who uses RowPro software and who also has a logbook account on the Concept 2 website. That list is maintained by Concept2, which provided HTML code to display it. Some things on the Concept2 website can only be viewed if you are logged in, so its VERY worthwhile for you to sign up with a free logbook account even if you don’t yet row just so you can check it out.
If you don’t know what RowPro software is, it is software that works with the Concept 2 rowing machines. (It also functions with the Concept 2 ski machine, but the avatar still looks like a boat if the SkiErg is connected to RowPro).
RowPro software is available somewhere on the Digital Rowing website at digitalrowing.com .
And if you don’t have a rowing machine but you are curious about them, you can check those out on the Concept 2 website. If you want to look at one of their made-in-USA rowing machines up close and personal, search on the Concept 2 website for a link called something to the effect, “indoor rower finder” which lets you put in your zip code and it will show you the facilities near you which have Concept 2 machines. I think that find-a-rower link is near the bottom of Concept 2’s home webpage.
