Two During the Grocery Run

The 5K finish graph

There were two little workouts today. The first was 5K easy on the SkiErg. Did it as a challenge to finish while my wife was grocery shopping. There was plenty of time afterwards so it was followed with another 1,000 meters as a warm down. But instead of going slower and warming down it turned out I went faster and got warmer. It felt good but heart rate didn’t slow down again after the 1K. It’s five or six hours later and it’s still thumping along at 150+. It will probably slow down to normal again while I sleep tonight.

The 1,000 meter “warm down”.

There was no screen recording made because RowPro wasn’t used.

Is Anyone Interested?

This was done online without scheduling because I wanted to do it immediately. There were two other rowers in the general chat room. I announced to them that a 5K was about to start, “if anyone is interested.” Neither of them responded so I guess they were otherwise occupied. I didn’t wait long before starting. You can see the question and lack of reply at the beginning of the screen recording.

Constantly Slow 5K

The plan was to row slow/easy and fairly constant from start to finish. Though it was done online it wasn’t scheduled and therefore was done alone. It wasn’t scheduled in the future because I wanted to do it immediately.

An Old Man and the 2K

Heart was contrary: pace was easy but HR kept increasing.

The plan was to do a season best 2K. That was easily accomplished, but heart rate got too high and I had to limit it to an easy 2K that never got me breathing hard.

“This old man, he played two,
He played knick-knack on my shoe.
With a knick-knack, paddy whack,
Give a dog a bone,
This old man came rowing home.”

There was another session done earlier. It was about 3K, done about one minute at a time during rest periods between strength training sets.

Grocery Shopping Race

This was a “race,” to finish before my wife returned from grocery shopping. Plan was to do the first 10 minutes as warmup and then do 1 minute intervals with one minute active rest. The last approximate 500 meters was warm down.

I was still perspiring but did finish the 5 kilometers a few minutes before she returned from her 6 mile round trip drive. It was a race of apples vs oranges, but since I knew about how long it would take for the 5K and about how long for the grocery trip, it was fun to do.

5K With a Few Intervals

Only 5,000 meters today. Plan was 8 minutes warmup then a few 1 minute intervals.

8 Out Of 10

Scheduled this session online, 20 minutes in advance. Nobody saw it and joined so did it alone. Plan was easy warmup first 10 minutes then 10 intervals of 1 minute each for the remaining 20 minutes. Did 8 out of 10 of the intervals. Skipped the 5th and 7th because HR went too high during 4th and 6th.

Mild Intervals with Server Glitches

RowPro finish screen.

This was an online session that started out with 8 or 9 rowers but the digitalrowing.com /Oarbits server acted up. You can see the weird things the server did, during the first few minutes of the screen recording. Because of the weirdness, everyone withdrew from the session and setup a QR as a substitute. Some of the original people who had joined the failed scheduled session were left out of the QR so the resulting number of rowers was a bit less than had signed up for the original scheduled session.

Today’s plan was easy first 10 minutes then 1 minute intervals. Had to skip one interval because HR went too high during the 7th interval.

Trying Yesterday’s Plan Again

Finish view of today’s RowPro screen

Yesterday’s rowing plan didn’t work out as anticipated so I had to wait until today to more row according to that plan. (Awkward pun intended.)

For reference, the yesterday plan was : easy the first 10 of 30 minutes and then alternating intervals every other minute to the finish. But heart rate got too wild too soon yesterday so that plan had to wait until today to more row. (Sorry, but I really like that pun.)

To approach a description of today’s rowing without any wordplay: Today’s idea was same as yesterday’s and today it was successful – HR was not too high and therefore all 10 intervals were accomplished. HR started to go too high during the 9th interval but settled down enough during active rest that the 10th interval was done according to plan.

Online for 30 Minutes with Company

RowPro display a moment after the starter’s announcement “ROW!”

The plan for this 30 minute piece was: easy the first 10 minutes and then intervals for every other minute until the end. But HR was too high after the first two intervals so there was more rest than anticipated and only 5 intervals instead of 10 during the last 20 minutes.

This session was online with one other rower who was located in Deutschland (Germany).

For quite a while – several months or longer – I’ve tried alternatives to rowing online which included listening to music, watching movies, watching documentary videos, watching educational videos and once in a while rowing with the “company” of one or more software-generated pace boats.

But my favorite is to row in the virtual company of other people with the only background sounds being the “singing of the chain” on the rowing machine and other ambient sounds in the room.

To say it another way: it seems that if a person can focus on the rowing workout it is more enjoyable than with something to “take the mind off” the process of rowing.
