Reflecting While Rowing

with-reflections

The harder you row, the more mental focus and energy is needed to continue the effort level.  But if your effort level is slow and easy, you have plenty of room for thinking about and reflecting on other things.  Today’s rowing session was a slow, easy and thoughtful half marathon.

When the remaining distance counted down to less than 10K, I took a break which lasted about 5 minutes before resuming and finishing the 21,097 meters.

Driven To Row More

driven-to-row-more

Today there was a little more back pain than yesterday, but nonetheless I felt driven to row a bit more distance than yesterday.  15K, easy pace.

15K report. RowPro 5 for the Mac surprised me and displayed no glitches today. The first split looks weird, but that’s because I paused for a bit immediately after starting.

Slower Than A Flying Boat

a-flying-boat

Another 12K today.  It was not exactly flying, but it was the fastest and longest pace sustained in more than 8 days.  It felt good, but I decided not to push hard and to just take it easy and natural.

There was some discernible sweat, but not enough for even a single drop to fall onto the rowing machine. That’s a measure of easy.

There was a glitch with RowPro 5 for the Mac during this session and it is displayed in the erroneous results for time, meters and DPS of the 30th split. Not that it makes a bit of difference.

Slow Rowing

fog-warning-art

Today’s session was another 12K, slowly.  About 15 to 20 minutes of the session time was with machine stopped, taking breaks for various reasons.

Easy Again

Just treading water

Today’s session was just treading water so to speak by doing 11K at a slow pace.

AB-Jan-6th-11K-rpt
Disregard the data shown for splits numbered 18, 26 and 28. The total time (and other totals except for the average pace) are all correct but RowPro 5 for the Mac had a problem with calculating the three splits 18, 26 and 28. And regarding the average pace for the session and any of the splits – RowPro 5 for the Mac rounds them off to the nearest whole second instead of showing the nearest tenth of a second. The average pace for the session was actually 2:26.9.

A Half Crazy Distance

half-crazy

It seems like quite a few days since having done any rowing.  The back pain is still not totally gone, but it has subsided enough that I was able to row gently today.  The chosen distance was a longer one, so as to help make up for some of the recent days lost.

Many people consider a marathon a “crazy” distance to do and I’m inclined to agree with them.  So today’s distance was only half-crazy, being half the distance of a marathon.

It was done very slowly and there were two necessary breaks before it was finished.  One of the breaks was a necessary one for myself and the other one was to help Diane find something that seemed to be lost.  The first break was a few minutes and the latter was a very short break.

WARM-UP

An alternate title for today’s rowing could be An Insufficient Warmup.

An alternate – alternate title for today’s post could be Pain Is A Party Pooper…

Today’s session was supposed to be a set of four 1,000 meter intervals but before finishing the second 1K, I experienced a lower back pain and had to slow down to accommodate it. I got off the erg and walked around a bit.  When I sat down again to do the 5 minute active rest portion, the pain returned, so I called a halt to the rowing for today and took a couple valerian tablets which are supposed to be good as muscle relaxants.

Perhaps I should warm up longer, when the house is cold.

The rowing started off with a 3K warm up but I guess that wasn’t enough.

Here’s the stuff for today’s training session:
